<image:caption>To date, dozens of volunteers have donated 1000's of hours of their time across 17 morning or evening shorebird capture & tagging sessions on a farm in Sunflower County, Mississippi, where DWB is partnering with the landowner to provide high-quality shorebird stopover habitat during the non-crop season using recycled surface water. For each session, volunteers happily navigate the stickiest of Delta gumbo mud in agricultural fields to set up "mist nets," along with decoys and audio lures, so that wary migratory shorebirds can be captured during the dim light of dawn and dusk. Each captured bird is treated with extreme care and (under federal permits) is affixed with not only a numbered metal leg band, but also a radio tag transmitting a signal captured by one of two nearby custom “Motus” radio towers. As long as a tagged bird remains in the area, the signal is picked up and our primary data are recorded.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When these champions of migration continue their journeys, sometimes to spend the non-breeding season as far south as Argentina or Chile, that local signal is lost. Occasionally, however, we are lucky enough to receive a signal from one of our tagged birds from a distant radio tower that is part of the same Motus network, allowing us to piece together another part of these birds' arduous journeys. For example, a Pectoral Sandpiper tagged in mid-September of 2022 was subsequently detected in Paraguay during its southward migratory journey, and then again in Nova Scotia, Canada, on its return journey north this past spring. On November 18, 2023, we radio-tagged four Dunlin (two of which are pictured below), one of whom spent the rest of the day feeding at our Delta field site, then flew overnight to the Texas coast, where it remained until December 17. Perhaps most exciting was the Lesser Yellowlegs that we tagged on October 13, 2023 (pictured at right), which spent five more days using our habitat, then flew directly to Panama, covering a distance of more than 1700 miles in just 53 hours.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - MS Delta Shorebird Tracking Project - Two of the Dunlin we radio-tagged on November 18, 2023, subsequently migrated to the Texas coast</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2022 and 2023, we radio-tagged 111 shorebirds of 10 species, with Least Sandpiper, Wilson’s Snipe, and Dunlin being the most frequent. Analyses of those data are underway, and are expected to result in one or more scientific publications. Meanwhile, we’re planning to continue in fall of 2024, hoping to expand the scope of scientific questions addressed. If you appreciate the importance of this type of on-the-ground bird conservation science, we could use your help! First, please consider sponsoring one or more radio-tagged shorebirds, at a cost of $250 each (click here to donate). For each sponsorship, you'll be assigned a unique individual bird, whose stopover data (and potential off-site detections) can be viewed on our Motus project page. Additional donations provide lodging for our volunteers (many of whom travel great distances to help), and the purchase of shorebird capture equipment. And if you’re interested in helping with the field sessions, we can always use more volunteers (tromping in the mud is optional!)—just send us an email (dwindbirds@gmail.com).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 2023 Big Day recap - On Friday, April 28, Andy Bell, J.R. Rigby, and myself conducted a Mississippi big day, to raise funds for Delta Wind Birds. As usual, we designed a route that we thought had a chance to set a new state record, this year again deciding to stick exclusively to the three coastal counties. To maximize the total number of species on a big day in spring along the Gulf of Mexico, it is important to time your attempt relative to the weather, so that conditions are not perfect for northbound songbird migrants to sail over the coast with a tailwind. Rather, you prefer some combination of rain and north winds over the northern Gulf, encouraging migrants to stop when they see land (a so-called "fallout"). As such, we became quite intrigued about a week ago, when it became clear that coastal Mississippi was going to see some significant rain on Thursday, April 27 (see prediction in image to right). Our idea was to plan a big day attempt for Friday the 28th, hoping that (1) a fallout would happen on Thursday, AND (2) weather conditions Thursday night & Friday morning would be such that fallout migrants would be discouraged from fleeing coastal migrant traps--maybe some light rain, north winds, etc. This has been our preferred approach, since birding ON the day of a fallout itself can be difficult, due to the inclement weather (again, see prediction in image to right!). Well, unfortunately, only the first of those two hopes were realized.</image:title>

<image:caption>Prothonotary Warblers, also sometimes called Golden Swamp Warblers, are iconic birds of forested wetland habitats. They are migratory, spending their breeding season (roughly April-August) in bottomland hardwood forests, especially forested wetlands, of the southeastern United States. The rest of their year is spent in the mangrove forests of Central and South America. Photo by Larry Pace.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Prothonotary Warbler nest box project: 2022 update</image:title>
<image:caption>Prothonotaries are the only warbler species to nest in tree cavities, as pictured here (photo by Larry Pace), where a male is delivering food to nestlings inside a nest cavity. High-quality nesting holes can be difficult to find, however, so nesting success of Prothonotaries may be improved by provision of appropriately sized nest boxes, similar to Eastern Bluebirds (see here for plans to build a box for a Prothonotary Warbler). Prothonotary Warbler populations are in decline due to habitat loss, and we can help them by protecting existing forested wetlands, and also by providing nest boxes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Prothonotary Warbler nest box project: 2022 update</image:title>
<image:caption>Those are both part of our mission at the DWB Sky Lake Nature Reserve in Humphreys County, MS. In October of 2020, with the help of several members of the Jackson Audubon Society, we installed 20 nest boxes for Prothonotary Warblers at the Reserve, when the water level at Sky Lake was quite low. Ten of the boxes were set close to the lake edge, and 10 were set further away. In addition, we equipped half the boxes with predator guards (5-gallon buckets) on their poles. Our hope was that in 2021, we could test whether Prothonotaries preferred locations closer to or further from the lake, and whether nesting success was improved by use of the predator guards.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Prothonotary Warbler nest box project: 2022 update</image:title>
<image:caption>Meanwhile, we were thrilled to recruit talented high school student Norah Bruce as an intern with DWB, to undertake monitoring the nest boxes in 2021. We planned to have her check each box every 2-3 weeks during nesting season.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Prothonotary Warbler nest box project: 2022 update</image:title>
<image:caption>So in April, 2021, we headed to Sky Lake, anxious to see if the Prothonotary Warblers had yet returned from their wintering grounds, and if they had begun using any of our boxes. First surprise: Wow, did we underestimate the range of fluctuation in water levels at Sky Lake! On April 3, we found that water levels were upwards of 15 feet higher than when the boxes had been installed, and all but 8 of our 20 boxes had been either torn from their poles by rising and swirling water, or pulled from the ground altogether! No Prothonotaries were detected.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Prothonotary Warbler nest box project: 2022 update</image:title>
<image:caption>On April 11, the water had kept rising, and only 4 of our boxes were above water (and just barely)…but TWO of them had Prothonotary nests under construction!</image:caption>

<image:caption>With the help of DWB volunteers, especially Meredith Wulff (pictured with Norah here) and University of Mississippi graduate student Emma Counce, Norah continued to monitor the 8 boxes that were available to birds most of the summer. This field work was challenging, typically involving some combination of kayaks, canoes, and ladders, along with lots of water and mud.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Prothonotary Warbler nest box project: 2022 update</image:title>
<image:caption>Ultimately, Norah’s data showed that Prothonotaries nested successfully at least 4 times in our boxes in 2021, producing approximately 13 young. In one instance, it appeared an active nest had been destroyed by a predator, suggesting that predator guards may be important for improving success. And we certainly learned that the boxes should be placed further upslope from the lake edge, to avoid being flooded in spring.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 2022, with continued help from Emma (pictured here with Norah) and Meredith, Norah is continuing to monitor warbler boxes at the Reserve. This time, we installed 10 boxes (further from the water!), all of which were above water in April.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Prothonotary Warbler nest box project: 2022 update</image:title>
<image:caption>However, on the first box check of 2022, we had a new surprise. Carolina Chickadee nests were occupying 4 of the 10 boxes! It was April 10, and male Prothonotaries had just arrived to begin defining and defending their territories, and searching for good nest sites. Meanwhile the chickadees, which are permanent residents in Mississippi, had gotten a head start and had already laid eggs!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Meanwhile, we’d love for you to visit the DWB Sky Lake Nature Reserve any time, and make your own observations of Prothonotary Warblers or whatever else you can find. You can park at the north end of the reserve, walk down the entrance steps (pictured here), turn right (south), and walk about 100 yards down a mowed path into the forest. From there, you should be able to amble through the woods, following our string of nest boxes and observing them from a respectful distance. Watch for the “Golden Swamp Warblers” and listen for their “sweet sweet sweet sweet” song. Click HERE for more information about the Reserve, including directions. Click HERE for more about Prothonotary Warblers, including recordings of their vocalizations. Let us know (dwindbirds@gmail.com) what you find out there, or if you have any questions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Five birds to listen for in the Delta this winter - 1. Western Meadowlark: The scientific name is Sturnella neglecta, but don’t neglect these western birds if you’re out and about in the Delta. The Delta is visited by a good number of these close relatives of our Eastern Meadowlark. You need very good looks at multiple field marks to distinguish them by plumage, but the voices are distinct. http://www.xeno-canto.org/234211 Compare to the “spring is so beautiful” song of the Eastern: http://www.xeno-canto.org/144089</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Five birds to listen for in the Delta this winter - 2. Lapland Longspur: One of my favorite winter birds. One of the most abundant grassland birds up north, but their winter range just dips down into the Delta. In cold years they get to the southern end of the Delta, but they’re more numerous in the northern counties. Listen for their distinctive flight call: http://www.xeno-canto.org/166962</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Five birds to listen for in the Delta this winter - 3. American Pipit: A common winter visitor to open agricultural areas. We even get some of these in the hills too, but they’ll be more common in the Delta. [Don’t be confused by the “Buff-bellied Pipit” name at Xeno-Canto. Taxonomists are a factious lot by nature (maybe fractious too), so there are competing naming schemes out there. The scientific name is the same in this case, Anthus rubescens, and even that is not true for all birds.] https://www.xeno-canto.org/153409</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Five birds to listen for in the Delta this winter - 4. Sprague’s Pipit: Really fascinating bird. Worthy of a post all its own. Let it suffice that this little grassland obligate’s bland plumage belies its true coolness. We get a handful of these endangered birds in the Delta annually, and it’s worth keeping an ear out for their distinctive alarm/flight call. You might, as Gene Knight did, find yourself riding down the road with the windows down and hear one flush from the road side. Never mind why you’ve got the windows down in the Delta in the winter. http://www.xeno-canto.org/128311</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Five birds to listen for in the Delta this winter - 5. Sandhill Crane: Okay, they’re my token “charismatic avian megafauna” entry in this list. Sure, you’re probably going to see these huge birds hanging out in the middle of a field. BUT, you might be scrutinizing a field for Lapland Longspurs and hear a few Sandhills flying over. I can think of two of my trips where we struck out on finding Sandhills in the fields but had a small group fly over: http://www.xeno-canto.org/161578</image:title>

<image:title>About - Who are we?</image:title>
<image:caption>Delta Wind Birds is a nonprofit (501(c)(3)) organization dedicated to protecting and creating wetlands, fostering ecotourism, and raising awareness of migratory birds and their habitats. Our projects often focus on shorebirds (or “wind birds”) in the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (or “Delta”), although our work also benefits ducks, herons, egrets, ibises, spoonbills, storks, terns, and warblers. To learn about our volunteer board of directors, click here. To listen to a podcast interview with our president, Jason Hoeksema, on Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s “Creature Comforts” radio show, click here (the segment starts around the 10:45 mark). Click the button below to read more about our three main initiatives.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Why help the wind birds?</image:title>
<image:caption>The shorebirds or “wind birds” are some of the most impressive migrants in the world, with many making an annual round-trip from the Arctic Circle to southern South America, and nearly half of all North American shorebird species currently face declining populations due to complex causes (click here and here to read more about shorebird conservation efforts in our region). These graceful creatures depend on high-quality shallow water and mudflat “stopover” habitat in our region to fuel up during their arduous spring and fall migrations. To watch a fascinating video about shorebird foraging strategies, click below.</image:caption>

<image:title>About - Habitat in the Delta</image:title>
<image:caption>The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, or Delta, lies along the eastern edge of the Mississippi Flyway and was historically a vast forested wetland. Agricultural development of the region has dramatically reduced wetland habitat, but much of the modern agricultural landscape can easily provide attractive stopover habitat for migratory shorebirds, often within the framework of normal agricultural production practices. Click below to read more about our Habitat on Working Lands program.</image:caption>

<image:title>Initiatives - Sky Lake - Sky Lake WMA</image:title>
<image:caption>Approximately 15 minutes from our DWB Sky Lake Nature Reserve (owned by Delta Wind Birds) is the must-see Sky Lake WMA Boardwalk (managed by the state of Mississippi) and its 1000+-year-old bald cypress trees. If you are in the area, you really must visit the ancient trees at the Sky Lake WMA Boardwalk. Make sure to call 662.335.2422 to confirm that the boardwalk is open before visiting, as it is sometimes closed for maintenance or due to flooding. The Sky Lake WMA Boardwalk has a very nice parking area, with restrooms available, and a covered picnic area. There is a 0.4-mile boardwalk to see the spectacular ancient trees, as well as a marked kayak/canoe trail (best from mid-winter through spring). For more information about the Sky Lake WMA Boardwalk, visit here and here, and read this article. The Sky Lake WMA Boardwalk is located at 1090 Simmons Rd., Belzoni, MS 39038, and can be found on mapping apps (Google Maps link). If you choose to visit the Sky Lake WMA Boardwalk first, and then want to drive around Sky Lake to reach the DWB Sky Lake Nature Reserve, exit the Boardwalk parking area and turn left to travel east on Simmons Rd about 0.75 miles, turn left and drive 0.2 miles, then turn right and travel 0.75 miles to Hwy 7 and turn right (south). Travel south several miles on Hwy 7, do NOT turn right on Smith Rd (even if your GPS tells you to), but rather continue just past the Jaketown Mound Site (or stop and check it out!), and turn right (west) on Fishco Rd. (not currently marked). Continue 1.3 miles, turn right on Old US Hwy 49W, and drive 0.9 miles to “Point A.” See Directions and map above to reach the DWB Sky Lake Nature Reserve from Point A by driving north on Sky Lake Rd (unmarked) approximately 2.3 miles.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Excellent temporary wetland habitat for migratory water birds can be made on working lands, e.g. by flooding a corn field in fall after harvest. This Wilson’s Phalarope was among the 1000’s of shorebirds and waterfowl that stopped at our habitat site on a farm near Indianola, MS, during its southward migration to South America, in fall 2020. <image:title>Initiatives - Habitat on Working Lands - Benefits beyond birds</image:title>
<image:caption>Our research on working farms in the Sunflower River Basin of the Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley (or Delta) shows that creation of temporary wetlands on crop fields in fall after harvest not only benefits birds, but conserves soil, keeps excess nitrogen out of our streams and rivers, and may improve subsequent crop yield.
